My Gripes

We need in the UK a complete and utter sea change in the way we think about Care Homes. It has to be a profound cultural change that everyone should care about. As the population grows medical advances prolong life and more and more people are reaching ages unheard of only a few years ago. Many more of us will find ourselves staring for hours at a time sitting in a chair in a motel style lounge unless we do something about it. I guess the reasons for past lethergy have been out of sight and out of mind. It is becoming harder to ignore, as many of us start to creep towards our own futures. Yes and having worked in care homes I am probably thinking of myself, and so should you be too. But whats wrong with them you might say, many of them are clean well run establishments with good track records. Glossy slick web sites shout out their virtues of personal dignity, recreational activities and medicaly efficiant enviroments with happy smiling staff. Ok that should all be taken with a pinch of salt and the statements really looked into for there efficacy.  What however does it all mean for the people who have to live there lives there. It is not the relatives, who make the decisions, who have to stay there. They can flit in and out of the enviroment. I am not saying that all care homes are run badly it is just that with small modifications and many that do not cost hardly anything, many lives would be enhanced if not prolonged. This makes economic sence for owners of care homes. I have learnt about painting residents doors the same colour as their own houses were, or staff not wearing clinical uniforms. Getting up and going to bed when they want to, fake bus stops outside the grounds to stop dementia residents wandering off and a few other things too. I started this site as a help to activity organisers and I now believe I want to start a revolution and the only thing I want to apologise for is the spelling.
